Generator installation :
It is important to choose an installer that has a higher expectation for the finished product. We always stive for the best installation for every customer. This means making sure that every installation has everything necessary to negate common issues. The most common issues we see with others installation include :
Not having a pad under the generator which can cause sinking issues
Not prepping for the pad properly which can cause undermining of the pad
Improper gas pipe sizing causing units to not function, hard start, or fail under load
Improper gas regulator placement causing running issues like hunting and hard starting
No flex line installed in the gas line which can cause vibration to fracture gas lines
Poor installations we have seen!
-
Total Failure!
This unit didn't have anything done properly during its installation! It is facing the furnace exhaust and fresh air, to close to the house, under a window, on wood, completely improperly wired, ats to close to the ground, and much more! Scary!
-
No Pad
This unit was sinking because of a poor installation and no pad to help spread the weight. The gas line is also incorrect. An appliance line is not ok for a generator application.
-
Pad overhang
This unit was just say on the ground. The overhang that has developed will eventually cause the pad to break and the generator will likely slide at some point.
-
Common Install
This is a pretty common installation. The biggest issue with this unit is the LP gas regulator is too close to the generator. These should be 10 ft away from the generator. This allows the regulator to act before the line is sucked dry. We also do not like how the ¾ seal tight is ran and prefer running all conductors in conduit. This helps shield them from the elements.
-
Regulator Issue
This unit also has its regulator installed too close to the unit. It is also oriented incorrect which could allow water to get into the vent.
-
Kinked gas line
This unit was installed by the home builder. On top of the severely kinked gas line in this picture they had also ran far to small of a gas line to this unit. The unit would not start even after unkinking the line!
-
No Flex
The flex that is on the ground in this picture was left inside the generator housing. The reason we need these flex lines it to isolate vibration. A ridged connection can cause the gas line to fractur! We would also like to see the wiring in conduit. While it is code, it doesn’t look good and will have weathering issues.
-
Small gas line
This unit ran but it would hunt (engine RPM would fluctuate rapidly) and fail under load. This unit only had a 1/2” line ran which will not supply enough volume for a generator to operate properly.
Generator Service
Generator service is a very important part of owning a standby generator system. Having trained and experienced technicians check your system can help catch issues like what is shown above as well as a whole host of other issues. Our core focus is making sure that top quality service is provided. We do not want to have to come out for additional work if we can avoid it!
